Stephen King as educated as our military? Nope.

7 05 2008

Here’s the statement that started this little kerfuffle:

Mr. King is quoted saying, “I don’t want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV but the fact is that if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don’t, then you got the army, Iraq, I don’t know, something like that. It’s not as bright. So that’s my little commercial for that.”

He’s done us the favor of opening his pie hole again to prove he is not all that bright.

Thus speaks another elitist asshat: Stephen King fires back after blogger attacks remarks

Stephen King has fired back at conservative critics who attacked him over a remark he made a month ago at a writers symposium for high school students.

A blogger jumped on King’s statement at the Library of Congress about the importance of reading in which he suggested poor readers have limited prospects, including service in the Army.

[...]

Blogger Noel Sheppard likened the comment to former Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry’s remarks that if you don’t get a good education, “you get stuck in Iraq.”

“Nice sentiment when the nation is at war, Stephen,” Sheppard wrote.

King fired back Monday.

Mr. Stephen \“That a right-wing-blog would impugn my patriotism because I said children should learn to read, and could get better jobs by doing so, is beneath contempt,” he said in a statement posted on his Web site.

King said he supports the troops but believes the war in Iraq is a “waste of national resources … and that includes the youth and blood of the 4,000 American troops who have lost their lives there and for the tens of thousands who have been wounded.”

“I live in a National Guard town, and I support our troops, but I don’t support either the war or educational policies that limit the options of young men and women to any one career — military or otherwise,” King said.

Impugned your patriotism? Nothing Mr. Shepard said does that, it is a simple response to an idiotic comment with little if no basis in fact, Stevie. He simply pointed out that comments like yours in time of war do no good to our troops, their morale, nor the sense of support they need to feel while away from home. But then again, we should give Mr. King a break. He has no idea what it is like to serve anything bigger than his publisher I would surmise given his apparent ignorance of our military.

Oh, and don’t forget, he lives in a National Guard town so that makes it alright to put down our servicemembers as uneducated dolts. He is after all, better and smarter than all of us stupid veterans. I imagine in Mr. King’s tiny little world, what he does on a daily basis puts him in a place where he believes he should be taken seriously when speaking on issues of the military and foreign policy.

Well, at least we know that every officer serving has the same or higher level of education as Mr. King. And from personal experience, I can also tell you that I have yet to meet someone who is serving or has served who cannot read, so Mr. King must know something none of us do.

Boy, sure glad he’s in a place where he can provide guidance to our children.
